Hop on the Island

When one person – or two – sets out on a journey, there is plenty to tell. Our trip through Shikoku had been planned for a long time, and we had prepared for an extended journey around and across the island.
Day 1 · Kurashiki · May 1, 2009
Our first day took us by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Okayama, where we picked up our rental car. From there we drove on to our first stop, Kurashiki, and spent the night.

The little town, still on the Honshu side of the water, is beautiful, and the evening we arrived was quiet and so pretty it was almost kitsch.
Day 3 · Uchiko · May 4, 2009

The next stop on our route was Uchiko – another lovely, unhurried town with a charming local pottery market. The wares and studios of the smaller workshops are well worth a visit, and it is a pleasure simply to let yourself drift through the lanes.
